Ancient Zvenigorod
The exhibition "Ancient Zvenigorod" presents exhibits telling about the ancient history of the city and its surroundings. Here you can see, in particular, objects of the early Iron Age – characteristic products made of clay, bone, metal; all of them belong to the Dyakov archaeological culture of the VII-VIII centuries BC – V-VI centuries AD. The settlements of this culture have been studied quite well and fully by scientists, including on our territory, but very few funerary monuments are known. One of them, the "House of the Dead", was excavated in 1966 at a settlement near the Savvino–Storozhevsky Monastery by archaeologist Yuri Alekseevich Krasnov.

Visitors will be able to see objects telling about Slavic settlements in the city and its surroundings, as well as archaeological finds that shed light on the beginning of the city and its heyday during the reign of Prince Yuri Dmitrievich of Zvenigorod. At that time, a unique white stone cathedral was built in the city, distinguished by its exquisite artistic execution. The cathedral was decorated with elaborate carvings on the outside and frescoes inside, created by the best icon painters of that time. The exhibition presents samples of white stone carvings of the Assumption Cathedral, fragments of its frescoes and a reconstruction of the famous Zvenigorod rank — a three-figure deesis found in the cathedral in 1918.
Guests of the exposition will also be able to learn about the history of the foundation of the Storozhevskaya monastery, the life of Zvenigorod district in the XVI century and during the Polish-Lithuanian intervention, as well as during the reign of the first tsars from the Romanov dynasty. Special attention is paid to the visits of the second tsar of this dynasty, Alexei Mikhailovich, who chose Savvin Monastery as his "favorite tsar's pilgrimage" and decorated it with new buildings, characterized by harmony and successful combination with the natural landscape of the city.
